The 9th British Expediton led by John Hunt, with Hillary, Tenzing Sherpa and George Lowe in the team, first explored Jiri back in 1953 before the successful climb of the Everest. Those who wish to complete the same trail used by Hillary and Tenzing and make their way up to Everest region must try Everest Base Camp via Jiri trek, a small village in the eastern region of Nepal. The Jiri route offers incomparable combination of natural and cultural wonders.Varying altitudes, diverse floras and faunas, ethnic cultures and indigenous lifestyles are some of the highlights of the trek. It takes you from the midland hills through the beaten tracks into the Himalaya. You can enjoy majestic vistas of the mountains, along with surrounding landscapes covered with rhododendron, magnolia and alpine forests. The portion of the trek from Jiri to Phakding offers a soothing experience with its calm surroundings and quiet landscapes. It involves a great deal of uphill/downhill hiking, and passing through countless number of villages -observe and mingle with the local inhabitants. Some of the major higlights of Everest Base Camp trek are; wandering through Sagarmatha National Park (UNESCO World Heritage Site), visiting Sherpa villages of Namche Bazaar and Phakding and the extraordinary hike of Kala Patthar (5,545 m/18,187 ft).
